Austria is a Democratic Republic and is located in Middle Europe. Since 1995 Austria is a member of the European Union. Austria is a largely mountainous country (60%) due to its location in the Alps.
It is divided in nine states: Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna.

Austria enjoys a moderate continental climate featuring four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Summers are generally warm and pleasant with cool nights, Winters are sunny, with reliable and frequent snowfalls. The weather is changeable throughout the year. However, summer rainfalls are usually heavy and of a short duration only. Winters are rather cold in the North-East.
